Outstanding Video of FD13 - 2012 Recap -

Firefighter Matt Cross (FD13 & Western Wake County Fire) apparently has a gift and/or a lot of time on his hands! He produced this exceptional piece that has been posted on some other websites including www.thebravestonline.com. Take the time to watch it, it's worth it!

Engine52.Blogspot IS GETTING A TUNE-UP

Some may have noticed that posts on here have been a bit scarce as of lately. One could even say, "nonexistent". There's been a lot of things changing and many unknowns within our Company's little world on the Westside. An evolution.

Josh, our unwavering, brave and loyal chauffeur (Engineer) was requested at another Engine house downtown. BooBoo is currently on maternity leave loving his beautiful new daughter, Aubrey. Upon his return in a few shifts, he'll be back in the saddle, operating Engine 4, Greensboro's busiest engine company.

Engineer Evans and SrFF Messina
(unsure which is which)
I (Vinnie) have been reassigned to Engine 11 (HazMat) on the city's southside. Station 11 is one the city's two HazMat Response stations, housing an Engine, a Ladder, a HazMat tractor-trailer, a Decon tractor trailer, Battalion (II) Chief and Shift Commander.

*52 now has a handful of new faces riding on B shift.

Brandon "krispy kreme" Boylston completed Rookie school with GFD's 63rd recruit class several months ago. He has been working nonstop since arriving at 52 and everyone expects him to do well on his FFI Probationary exam after new years. We wish him well.

PFF Boylston

Eng. Michael Zimmerman took the controls of the best Engine Company in the city from Josh. A great first driving assignment following promotion! Zim's gonna do well and has a great future ahead dodging oncoming traffic on Wendover and honing his skills.

Engineer Zimmerman

SrFF. Brandon Lucas came to 52 from Engine 49. He is already familiar with 52's ways by having ridden many, many calls with 52 as the borders of each station meet. He's a great addition.

SrFF Lucas

SrFF. Justin Patterson is staying put for the time being. He's knows the job, territory and rig inside and out and is an asset to any company he rides with.

NOW!
For some changes - as I am no longer a part of The 52 House and I'm not even housed close to the Westside, I don't think having the blog named The Wild Wild West(side) makes sense....bad marketing, i dunno, false advertising, kinda? So, I'm gonna go with a new blog name and  cover a little more than my first due territory, i.e. citywide incidents, relative or meaningful county-side stories, reports or articles I believe are imperitive, issues within our local government, Our Union, etc., etc.
So, to the few of you that do (did) follow this blog, it is going back in service tonight. I will do my best to keep it updated with pics, news and stories.
Thanks. Be Safe.

Running In Memory of Captain Caviness

Several members of the Greensboro Fire Department will participate in running the Chicago Marathon this month. It is an absolutely awesome cause and a wonderful contribution to keeping Will's memory alive. Please read the article and follow up with how you may be able to contribute as well!

Building Constuction / Building Collapses

I ran across this compilation of building collapses through a link, through a link, through a link, etc. It reinforces the fact that we, as firefighters, must be more than just familiar with the buildings we are literally walking in to every day. We must be street-wise experts on building construction and the secrects that may one day, either save your life or take your life. Literally.

One needs to keep a keen eye, not just while you're on duty but when you're out running errands or killin' time. Look around yourself - look above, what's your ceiling type, what sort of material is it made of, is it a drop cieling, is it exposed light weight truss? There's a million different variables.
Look below your feet, what you're walking on, think about where your standing and what could potentially be there. Basement/cellar? If there is, what sort of storage is likely to be below you? What sort of details can give you hints of whats below the linoleum or tile? What do the walls look like? Which ones are load bearing vs non-load bearing? Which one are you gonna be able to punch through when you get in a pinch? This is the stuff we need to know!

Before I go much further off track, my point is this, KNOW YOUR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.

Rest assured that Engineers, the real ones with science degrees, are not our friends. They are here simply to come up with the most cost effective plan using the least amount of material and labor possible to construct a building. Period. Firefighters are not in the forefront of their minds as they're waiting for their paychecks.

Read. Learn. Share. Prepare. Never Stop.

Forcible Entry Training E4, 5, 52 & L5

Engines 4, 5 (USAR), 52 & Ladder 5 (USAR) all took part in a forcible entry refresher. GTCC was gracious enough to allow us to use their props and campus. It was a few hours well spent for companies to tighten up their skills on both commercial & residential doors using everything from light irons to rotary saws.

Multiple Fires Keep Greensboro Crews Busy

Two seperate, unrelated fires within a couple miles of one another kept Greensboro Fire busy yesterday. The high humidity and heat made conditions harsh for crews. Although a second alarm wasn't struck for either fire, extra companies were brought in to assist with operations, rehab & relocations.
